Debate: 3 Reasons HotS is better than DOTA 2
MOBAs are the ideals form for e-sports; in my humble opinion. The format is followable by the fan and broadcastable to the masses in real time, and it’s a relatively fast passed format that relies mostly on skill. So it’s a game format that deserves examination.
The first obvious question is ‘what is the best MOBA game,’ and that is League of Legends. But I don’t care about that. The REAL question is “Which is better; HotS or DOTA 2?”
The answer is HotS; Blizzard’s Heroes of the Storm. Below are 3 of the many reasons why.
1. Pace
Not only are the games shorter on the clock, but they also include more Player versus Player action. Most games begins with a team fight, and creep remains a secondary consideration throughout the game.
The maps are smaller, the fights happen more swiftly, and yes, legit ‘Junglers’ are out of luck (sorry to you truly skilled few, you know who you are).
Bottom line is the game moves more quickly, you get more PvP action, and you have the opportunity to play with and against more toons.
2. IP
The Blizzard universe is one of the most beloved in history. More importantly, it’s made a boat load of money. The result is a very deep, very rich, very well polished world of characters that is on full display here.
The game is extremely well designed. From skins, to abilities, to maps, and audio Blizzard’s done a great job of providing variety while still hitting all the classic legends you want to see if you are a fan of the content. For the more casual fan, it’s just looks bad ass as hell; and that’s enough.
More importantly, DOTA 2 is a Blizzard IP rip off! Facts.
3. Ranking System
It’s a hard pill to swallow for some of us, but this game does a great job of determining player skill. It’s quick, it’s accurate, and it makes every game a battle. My experience is other MOBAs is that 80% of games are an ass beating; be I giving or receiving.
Blizzard has the benefits of absurd funds to pull from and the benefit of being late to the party. Additionally, they continue to innovate, update, and elevate the ability for their match making system to pit you against opponents that will ultimately push you the be the best player possible.
Most important of all, because of the a-fore-mentioned struggle, leveling up in this game is a deeply emotional experience… and losing rank it is equally emotional.
Bottomline is that it’s HotS all the way for me.
